Markus Söder (CSU) has called for greater involvement of the German states in federal government decisions. According to Deutschlandfunk, Söder said in the station’s ‘Interview of the Week’ regarding the failed tax-free bonus for employees that he had pointed out the situation of the states from the very beginning.

The federal government had planned a tax-free bonus of up to 1000 euros for employees, but it failed to secure a majority in the Bundesrat. Söder criticized that the states had not been sufficiently involved in shaping the measure. He called for early coordination between the federal and state governments in the future to avoid such blockades.

The CSU leader emphasized that the states must have a say in important projects from the start. ‘That applies this week, that applies this year,’ Söder said verbatim. He advocated for a reform of federal-state cooperation to make decision-making more efficient.

EuroPulse reported on May 18, 2026, about Söder’s call for reforms by the summer break (https://europulse.today/soeder-reformen-sommerpause/).
