Marta Kostyuk cries after Russian missile strikes near her parents’ home in Kyiv

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk reported a Russian missile attack on Kyiv after her first-round victory at the French Open in Paris. According to the Ukrainian news site 24tv, a Russian rocket landed just 100 meters from the 24-year-old's family home.

Marta Kostyuk reported a Russian missile attack on Kyiv after her first-round victory at the French Open in Paris. According to the Ukrainian news site 24tv, a Russian rocket landed just 100 meters from the 24-year-old’s family home. Kostyuk said she cried almost the entire morning after receiving news from her hometown.

Kostyuk defeated former Russian player Oksana Selekhmetjewa in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris. After the match, the Ukrainian stated: “I don’t want to talk about myself. I am incredibly proud of myself and happy to have made it to the second round, but all my thoughts and my heart are with the people in Ukraine today. Glory to Ukraine.” She dedicated the victory to the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian capital had repelled a massive Russian attack the previous night, involving dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as hundreds of attack drones. Kostyuk emphasized that Ukrainians are the best role model for her because they stand up and keep going despite everything. She thanked the fans who came to the stadium with Ukrainian flags to support her.
