According to a report by “Welt,” an analysis of roll-call votes in the Bundestag has found that opposition lawmakers are particularly often absent. The leader in absences is Left Party politician Gregor Gysi, who was not present for every second vote.
In contrast, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) and CDU lawmaker Philipp Amthor have no absences. Union and SPD had recently tightened the rules: anyone who is absent without excuse faces deductions of 300 euros.
EuroPulse reported on May 24, 2026, about the initiative by the Union and SPD to suspend the increase in parliamentary allowances (link).
