During the massive air strike on Kyiv on Sunday morning, Russia once again deployed its hypersonic missile Oreshnik. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least four people were killed and over 100 wounded. Hundreds of buildings were damaged or destroyed, including the ARD radio and television studio in the Pechersk district, which was heavily damaged by the blast wave.
Unusually sharp criticism came from pro-Russian military bloggers. Military observer Vladimir Romanov wrote that the missile was “just very expensive iron in the ground.” He added that hardly anyone outside of pensioners still believes in the weapon’s advertised image. War blogger Kirill Fedorov, meanwhile, questioned the reports of damage, claiming without evidence that parts of the warheads had vaporized on impact.
The deployment of the Oreshnik, a new type of hypersonic missile, was apparently intended to demonstrate military strength. Instead, voices in the Russian camp questioning the value of the expensive weapon are multiplying. Ukrainian authorities documented the damage in Kyiv, while Russian bloggers dismiss the portrayal as exaggerated.
