Consumer prices in the US rose 4.2 percent in May compared to the same month last year, the Labor Department reported. It is the highest reading in three years.

Donald Trump had previously called for a cut in the key interest rate. However, economists say high inflation makes such a move unlikely, as the Federal Reserve traditionally raises rates to cool the economy when prices rise.
