Russia’s crude oil production fell to its lowest level in a year in May. According to the Kyiv Post, Russia produced only 9.009 million barrels per day — nearly 690,000 barrels below its OPEC+ target.

The reason for the decline, the Kyiv Post reports, is the intensified Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. In May alone, Ukraine carried out 31 attacks on oil facilities. The strikes aim to weaken Russia’s war economy by hitting fuel supplies for the army and revenues from oil exports.

Ukrainian forces have significantly stepped up their attacks on refineries and storage depots in recent months. The production losses show that this tactic is increasingly taking effect. Despite the reduction, Russia remains one of the world’s largest oil producers, but Ukrainian attacks are putting pressure on the industry.
