Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia will develop drones with artificial intelligence (AI) and build its own satellite network in low Earth orbit. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Putin acknowledged that Ukraine has intensified its drone use in the war. Russia must catch up in this field, the Kremlin chief said.

The announcement comes amid Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, where drones play a central role on both sides. Ukraine has massively expanded its drone production and regularly strikes targets deep inside Russian territory, Russia has focused on defense systems and its own attack drones. With AI-powered systems and a satellite network, Moscow apparently aims to improve reconnaissance and strike capabilities.

Putin’s announcement comes at a time when Ukraine expects a new Russian mobilization. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his country is receiving increasing indications of preparations for an additional mobilization in Russia. Putin wants to compensate for the high losses at the front, Zelensky said, adding that this confirms Moscow is not interested in genuine negotiations.
