The federal government’s response to a Green Party inquiry, obtained by the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), shows that more than 90 rail projects – both planned and already under construction – could come to a halt because the federal government is not providing sufficient funds. The shortfall affects all new construction and upgrades of rail infrastructure.

The transport alliance Allianz pro Schiene sharply criticizes the funding gap. “We expect the federal government to keep its promise: that what is ready for construction will actually be built,” demanded Managing Director Dirk Flege. The government must adjust the 2027 budget and finance the so-called Infraplan – the Federal Transport Ministry’s steering instrument for rail infrastructure – on a long-term, multi-year basis.

The government’s response also reveals that the investments planned through 2030 for ongoing and new construction projects fall short of the needs identified by the government itself. Allianz pro Schiene warns that without reliable funding, rail expansion risks stalling – with consequences for passengers and the transport transition.
