According to Zeit, a fire broke out in the Dormition Cathedral of the Monastery of the Caves on Monday night. Kyiv military governor Tymur Tkachenko said on Telegram that there was serious damage on the grounds of the complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Videos on social media show flames shooting from the nearly 1,000-year-old church.
The cause of the fire was initially unclear: whether direct Russian missile hits or falling debris from Ukrainian air defense triggered the blaze remained open. The monastery complex on the hills above the Dnipro River has been under UNESCO protection since 1990. Its origins date back to the 11th century; the cathedral was destroyed in 1941 during World War II and only rebuilt in the late 1990s.
Nationwide, according to Ukrainian authorities, there were several dead and dozens injured. In Kyiv alone, at least ten people were injured, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, and there were power outages and fires. Military governor Tkachenko reported more than 40 impacts in the capital. According to initial findings, the Russian attackers used more than 50 missiles and around 500 drones.
Heavy shelling was also reported from other regions. In Kharkiv, five rescue workers were killed and four other people injured, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing Governor Oleh Syniehubov. In Dnipro, at least one person was injured. The reports could not initially be independently verified.
