Billion-dollar order for Neptun shipyard: Wind power platforms from Rostock

The Neptun shipyard in Rostock has received a billion-dollar order to build offshore converter platforms. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, grid operator 50Hertz awarded the contract to a consortium of Siemens Energy and Meyer subsidiary Neptun.

The order initially covers one converter platform of the new two-gigawatt standard, to be built at the Neptun shipyard. A second order is currently being negotiated – if it materializes, the total volume will amount to around 2.5 billion euros. This was announced by 50Hertz together with Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU).

For Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the order means an economic boost: up to 500 new union-covered jobs at the shipyard and another 500 positions at suppliers could be created. Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) called it a “huge order.” The Meyer shipyard group, which has owned Neptun since 1997, aims to broaden its base after difficult years.

For a long time, it was disputed whether German shipyards could compete internationally for highly specialized offshore installations. 50Hertz CEO Stefan Kapferer sees himself vindicated: “It proves that domestic shipyards can now offer competitive bids for building offshore platforms.” Reiche also viewed the award as an industrial policy signal – globally, only a few companies can build such facilities.

Production of the first platform is set to begin in 2028, with planning extending to 2035. Neptun CEO Ralf Schmitz called it a “significant milestone” for the shipyard and the entire Meyer group. The order secures long-term capacity utilization and additional skilled workers.
