Germany's interior ministers from federal and state levels (IMK) gathered in Hamburg on Wednesday for their three-day spring conference. The Turkish Community in Germany (TGD) called on security authorities to take threats against people with a migration background more seriously.
TGD Federal Chairman Gökay Sofuoglu said he misses interior politicians who care about the safety of people with a migration history. What is needed is an integration policy that strengthens a sense of belonging. With an eye on the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the AfD can hope for gains according to polls, Sofuoglu expressed great concern about security in Germany, especially in eastern Germany.
Another topic is rising violent crime among children. Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) rejects lowering the age of criminal responsibility to twelve. The German Police Union (DPolG), however, demands this. DPolG Federal Chairman Heiko Teggatz stated that perpetrators are getting younger and are being instrumentalized by criminal networks. The rule of law must be able to respond, with the educational character of juvenile criminal law taking precedence.
Not on the agenda is a ban on fireworks, which the Police Union (GdP) advocates. Controversies are expected over measures against violent football fans and the adjustment of fines to the European sanction level, as this would require agreement with transport policymakers.
