In the state parliament on Wednesday, Günther rejected the accusation of deliberate deception. The state constitutional court had ruled that the parliament should have been more comprehensively informed before its decision on the convertible bond for Northvolt. “It was a mistake that this did not happen,” Günther said. Consequences would now be drawn from the ruling, such as closer involvement of the committees.

The opposition, consisting of the SPD, FDP, and SSW, had accused Günther of violating the constitution and demanded political consequences in a joint motion of disapproval. SPD parliamentary group leader Serpil Midyatli said: “Mr. Minister President, you knew the risks, we did not.” FDP parliamentary group leader Christopher Vogt called for personnel consequences in the state chancellery. However, the opposition’s motion did not find a majority.

Instead, the parliament adopted an alternative motion from the CDU and Greens. This stipulates that the parliament will in future receive the same decision-making basis as the state government in a timely manner. All relevant meetings and procedures must be documented in the future. CDU parliamentary group leader Tobias Koch spoke of a “political escalation by the opposition” and emphasized that there had been no deliberate deception.
