On the second day of his stay in the Uzbek capital, Steinmeier met with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Topics included industry, energy, logistics, mining, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in these areas.

The German president recalled that as foreign minister in 2006, he had already pushed for a stronger German focus on Central Asia. “At the beginning, that was not particularly easy. But this visit with talks at the highest political level shows that we have come significantly closer to each other today,” Steinmeier told Euronews. The conditions for closer economic and cultural cooperation are now very good.

The trip to Uzbekistan is part of a larger Asian tour that previously took Steinmeier to Indonesia and the Philippines.
