"My statement that there is currently no difference between the policies of the CDU and the AfD was abbreviated and wrong in that form," he told the German Press Agency (dpa).

The incident has caused a stir in the political landscape, with several conservative politicians calling for Pantisano’s resignation. CDU Secretary-General Carsten Linnemann told dpa: “Mr. Pantisano had the chance yesterday to distance himself from his vile insinuation in interviews. He did not do that.”

Pantisano stressed that the distinction between political opponents within the democratic spectrum and those who want to abolish democracy must not be blurred. He also expressed concern about a possible rapprochement between the CDU and the AfD.
