Markus Behrens, chairman of the management board of the regional directorate Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia of the Federal Employment Agency, warns against overly gloomy forecasts. While typical entry-level tasks in the IT sector could be taken over by AI in the future, which could also cost jobs, new jobs that make less use of AI are emerging at the same time, Behrens told the German Press Agency.
Behrens fundamentally believes that employees in the IT sector will have secure jobs in the coming years as well. Digitalization is a trend that cuts across all economic sectors. The actual effects of AI cannot yet be fully described.
A recent study by the Ifo Institute shows that around one in five German companies (19.2 percent) consider it easy or very easy to replace skilled workers with a university degree using AI. Ifo researcher Anna Ruffert explained that AI can partially replace formal qualifications and experience. The Federal Employment Agency itself already uses 23 AI tools – not to cut jobs, but to make work easier, for example when matching job seekers with vacancies or organizing events.
