Greens Call for Regional Electricity Prices – Cheaper Power at Point of Generation

The German Greens are pushing for electricity to be cheaper where it is generated, according to a resolution passed at the party's small party congress in Sassnitz.

Currently, a uniform wholesale electricity price applies across Germany. However, renewable energy is mainly produced in the north and east, while industrial centers are in the south and west. Because the power grid often cannot transport the electricity sufficiently, wind turbines and solar plants sometimes have to be shut down to prevent overloading.

The Greens want to solve this problem with regional price signals. In a motion adopted at the party congress in Sassnitz, the party states: “Regional price signals make wind and solar power cheap where the plants are located – more efficient, cheaper, with direct participation.” The new pricing structure is intended to relieve the grid, make the system safer and more stable, preserve industrial cores and enable new production, while keeping the market liquid.

Certain regions would particularly benefit from the regulation – especially those where a lot of wind and solar power is generated.
