Syrskyi: Russian Advance from Bryansk on Chernihiv ‘Realistic’

Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi warns that a Russian offensive from the Bryansk region into Oblast is 'realistic.'

In an interview with the 1+1 channel on June 30, Syrskyi said the Ukrainian army is preparing for this possible attack. An invasion from Belarus, however, is unlikely, as no troop concentration is currently observed there. Although Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has ordered the General Staff to examine various options for an offensive on Kyiv, including from Belarusian territory, Syrskyi doubts that the leadership in Minsk will again make its territory available as a staging area.

The goal of an advance from Bryansk, according to the commander-in-chief, would be to seize Ukrainian border areas and tie down Ukrainian forces that would then be missing on the eastern front. The terrain in the north is difficult for attackers: many swamps, few roads, and no bridges for heavy tanks. However, the extensive forests provide cover for diversionary operations.

Syrskyi also commented on four Russian relay stations on Belarusian territory that Moscow used to control Shahed drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave Lukashenko an ultimatum on June 19, demanding they be shut down within a week. On June 24, Zelenskyy said the relays had been out of operation since June 22. Syrskyi confirmed that they have not yet been dismantled, but a reactivation is unlikely. Ukraine will do everything to prevent attacks from that direction.
