The attack began on the evening of July 1 with a wave of drones and continued after midnight with dozens of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. The capital was under fire for more than eleven hours in total. Mayor Vitali Klitschko called the attack the most massive since the start of the war and declared July 3 a day of mourning.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited one of the impact sites in the Darnytsia district in the morning. There he said the death toll could have been lower if partners had kept their promises to deliver air defense missiles. “If the partners had given in time what they promised, we could have saved more houses and, frankly, more people,” Zelenskyy told reporters. He announced he would continue to push for the delivery of defense missiles.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 28 ballistic missiles at Kyiv, 25 of which hit. The military attributes the low interception rate to an acute shortage of PATRIOT interceptor missiles. Zelenskyy estimated the need to defend against about 70 ballistic missiles at least 140 PATRIOT missiles. Norway has pledged funding for 200 missiles, but not a single one has been delivered so far.
