More Than Just Football: FC KARS, a Team of Ukrainian Refugees, Successfully Debuts at a Tournament in Germany

The KARS football club, consisting entirely of Ukrainian refugee children, has played its first tournament in Germany. The team, which brought together youths fleeing the war, immediately proved to be worthy competitors against traditional German sports clubs (Vereine). In their debut competition, FC KARS secured an honorable fourth place, and the players were awarded medals and professional sports equipment.

For these boys, stepping onto a German football pitch is already a victory that goes far beyond the tournament standings. Each FC KARS player carries a heavy personal history. All of them were forced to leave Ukraine due to the outbreak of full-scale Russian aggression. Many were evacuated in 2022 directly under fire; some had spent weeks hiding in cold basements before that. Leaving their homes, they left behind their schools, familiar streets, close friends, and their fathers.

Finding themselves in a new country, the boys were in desperate need of psychological support, a social foundation, and a community of like-minded peers. This is exactly how the idea of creating a football division based at the KARS club was born. Football became more than just a game for them—it became a safe space where they could hear their native language, feel the support of a teammate, and find solid ground beneath their feet once again.

Today, FC KARS is a united, tight-knit team. Their successful performance at the debut tournament proved that integration through sports works effectively: the Ukrainian boys take to the pitch entirely on par with German teams, demonstrating character, discipline, and a will to win.

The club emphasizes that this tournament is just the beginning of a long journey. Ahead for FC KARS are new matches and full integration into the European sports community, where, thanks to football, each of these boys knows for certain: he is no longer alone.
