US Donald Trump apparently wants to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about ending Russia’s war of aggression during the NATO summit in Turkey. Trump expressed confidence that a solution is closer than many believe.
The US-mediated peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had recently stalled. A trilateral meeting planned for early March in Geneva was postponed. The reason given was the current US focus on the Middle East.
Kremlin signals readiness for talks
Judging by his statements, Trump has by no means lost interest, according to Peskov. Rather, he is pushing Zelenskyy to reach an agreement. Russia is interested in continuing the talks, but the location and date for the next round remain unclear.
Due to the differing positions of the US and Russia, the time and place have not yet been agreed. He insisted on a personal meeting with Trump, as some issues have become deadlocked.
Background of the stalled negotiations
The trilateral talks in Geneva ended after just two hours on February 18. The parties had agreed to further negotiations. However, there has been no progress since then.
