Deutsche Bahn has announced another delay in the renovation of the Nuremberg-Regensburg line. The company said the connection, which has been closed since February, will now remain shut until July 31.

Deutsche Bahn has admitted to another delay in the renovation of the Nuremberg-Regensburg line. The connection was originally scheduled to reopen on Friday, but safety checks on the signal boxes have made a later date necessary. The state-owned company has now set July 31 as the new opening day. Until then, buses will replace trains and long-distance services will be rerouted.

Gerd-Dietrich Bolte, responsible for infrastructure planning at the Bahn subsidiary InfraGo, apologized for the delay. “We sincerely apologize,” he said. “At the same time, safety is the top priority in railway operations.” He promised to complete the remaining work in Bavaria as quickly as possible.

This is already the second delay in the so-called major renovations this year. Only in June did the Hamburg–Berlin line go back into service late after a six-week modernization – frost had hampered earthworks at the time. The railway’s renovation concept has drawn criticism from competitors and parts of the political spectrum because it forces freight traffic onto long detours and heavily burdens passengers.
