According to the report, Wegner had not conducted any such call before 12:45 p.m. The revelation has sparked sharp reactions from the opposition and within the government. SPD top candidate Steffen Krach stated he would under no circumstances allow Kai Wegner to take on a role in a future senate. There is also headwind from his own ranks: the chairman of the Young Union in Berlin, Harald Burkart, called for Wegner to withdraw as top candidate.
It had already become known that Wegner played tennis for part of the first day of the blackout, although he initially claimed he had been busy with crisis calls all day. Wegner himself expressed regret over the impression created.
The arson attack on a cable bridge in early January left around 100,000 people without power for a time. Just weeks before Berlin’s state parliament election, the affair is increasing pressure on the CDU top candidate.
