Saxony-Anhalt's state premier Sven Schulze (CDU) is calling for a quick replacement of Jens Spahn as parliamentary group leader of the CDU/CSU. According to Zeit, Schulze fears that the Berlin personnel debate will overshadow the state election campaign in his state.

Schulze spoke before a CDU presidium meeting in Berlin. “For me, the expectation in the election campaign is that we do not permanently see our campaign overshadowed by topics from Berlin,” he said. This applies not only to him but also to the candidates in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6. Polls see the AfD clearly ahead of the CDU. The debate about the resigned parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn “is not helpful” but harms the election campaign, Schulze previously told the news radio Aktuell.

Friedrich Merz (CDU) has scheduled a special session of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for July 29 to decide on the succession of Jens Spahn. Spahn resigned last Saturday at Merz’s request.
