The number of fatal drowning accidents in Germany is rising, with young men particularly at risk in lakes. At the same time, fewer and fewer children are learning to swim, reports Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The German Life Saving Association (DLRG) recorded at least 99 deaths from drowning in June – the highest number since 2003. Young men are particularly affected, often dying in lakes. At the same time, the number of children who can swim safely is declining.

The Ebersberg Water Rescue Service wants to counter this trend and is organizing a ‘Swimming Day’ at the Grafing outdoor pool. The event includes a water familiarization workshop for the youngest children and advises parents to get their kids used to water early on.

The recent hot weekend in the Munich area showed the severity: overcrowded pools, busy emergency rooms, and a young man who drowned in Lake Starnberg.
