OpenAI, based in San Francisco, is accelerating the monetization of its ChatGPT. The former text generator is set to become a multifunctional platform that bundles the programming tool Codex and independently acting AI assistants. The move is driven by pressure to generate profitable revenue streams ahead of a planned initial public offering.
Although ChatGPT boasts millions of users, the majority use the service for free. The new strategy now targets business customers more aggressively: they currently contribute the bulk of revenue.
To free up capacity for the new tools, OpenAI is streamlining existing features. In the future, new menus and shortcuts on the website and in the apps will encourage users to integrate external partner applications and development tools into their daily routines. Long-term, OpenAI envisions a central AI assistant that automatically recognizes user intentions and executes tasks independently – from scheduling appointments to writing code snippets.
