Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Monday on X that the Iranian threats were “unjustified and unfounded.” The regime in Tehran, he said, is a direct accomplice to Russian aggression against Ukraine, supplying Moscow’s war with weapons that have killed Ukrainians since 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Ukrainian forces had achieved “very good results” in attacks in the Caspian Sea, including against ships transporting military cargo from Iran. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said its drones had hit an oil platform, a Russian missile boat, and “cargo ships under international sanctions.”
Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, told Iran’s state news agency that the ship “Anna” was anchored about five kilometers from the mouth of the Volga River when it was attacked. Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, stressed that the vessel was transporting components for drones and missiles from Iran to Russia — not civilian cargo.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the attack a “flagrant violation of the UN Charter” and wrote on X that the incident “CANNOT GO UNANSWERED.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it had “never interfered in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.”
