Deutsche Bahn has announced it will support supply chains for industry and trade during low water levels. CEO Bernhard Osburg signaled that the subsidiary DB Cargo can mobilize around 400 freight cars on short notice. This happened during a meeting of Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) with his state counterparts.
Bilger stressed the urgent need for action, as water levels on the Rhine and Danube remain low. To minimize the impact on supply chains, transports are to be shifted to road and rail. Several federal states have already issued exemptions from the Sunday driving ban for trucks to allow more flexibility in freight transport.
DB Cargo plans to provide up to 500 additional freight cars in the coming months for a long-term concept against low water. A single freight train can replace up to ten inland vessels, increasing efficiency in the transport sector.
