After weeks of restraint in public appearances, the quiet summer period ends for Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). Deputy Government Spokesman Sebastian Hille announced that the retreat is deliberately designed as a “working retreat.” In addition to the deliberations, there should also be an opportunity for conversations away from the topics in the evening.
A central point is the competitiveness of the German economy. Hille stressed: “Germany should remain a strong industrial country.” The goal is to live in prosperity even in times of artificial intelligence and to create secure jobs. Guests from business, skilled trades, and start-ups are also expected.
At the regular cabinet meeting in Neuhardenberg, heat protection and climate adaptation are planned as a regular agenda item, with discussion and reports from several ministries. In a preparatory paper, the SPD-led ministries proposed, among other things, establishing a “joint task” in the Basic Law to enable stronger co-financing by the federal government.
Merz held the first retreat of his term last year at Villa Borsig on Lake Tegel.
