The criticism comes just days before the cabinet meets at Neuhardenberg Palace. The environmental organizations accuse the government of losing track in climate and energy policy. Instead of making progress, there are setbacks and a consolidation of fossil structures, said Vanessa Klocke, co-head for climate protection and energy policy at WWF Germany.
In light of heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires, the federal government must significantly advance climate protection and the phase-out of fossil fuels, Klocke said. Greenpeace also criticizes: Georg Kössler, head of policy at Greenpeace Germany, spoke of a dangerous step backwards. Anyone who slows the expansion of renewable energy, questions the planned end of the combustion engine, and builds new gas plants endangers the country’s future viability.
The groups see the current policy as a threat to Germany’s economic development. They demand a clear commitment to renewable energy and a consistent departure from fossil technologies.
