According to SPIEGEL information, the investigations have now progressed to the point where the German government wants to attribute the attempted attack from August to a Russian intelligence service. The details are to be publicly announced on Tuesday. This marks the first time Berlin has directly blamed Russia for an attack on German soil.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) plan to inform the public late in the afternoon about the findings and the initial consequences. Wadephul is returning from a trip to Algeria for this purpose and will not attend the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Ireland. Friedrich Merz has declined to comment for now.
The drone, packed with explosives, was discovered in the security area of Leipzig/Halle Airport in the early hours of August 5. It apparently struck a Ukrainian cargo plane, but the detonator failed. The airport serves as a logistics hub for the Bundeswehr and NATO.
