In a comment to journalist Halyna Ostapovets on August 29, Budanov said: “Russia has elections ahead. They need to show their voters an impressive picture of victory, because they do not feel victory on the battlefield. Neither does the whole world.” He added: “That is why there is terror. They do not know how to do it otherwise. At least until the elections.”
The elections to the Russian State Duma are scheduled for September 18-20. Moscow has refused to invite international observers to monitor the vote. Budanov pointed to the ongoing Shahed drone attacks and stressed that countermeasures are being developed in parallel.
On Tuesday, Russia attacked Ukraine with drones for the third consecutive day, including the Kyiv region. In the latest attacks, a warehouse with tens of thousands of books from Ukrainian publishers was destroyed, while warehouses in Bucha caught fire. On the night of September 1, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding area, killing twelve people and injuring at least 18 others, including children.
