The German government is drawing consequences from the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport: the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the ‘Russian House’ in Berlin must close. Minister Johann Wadephul announced the measures as a response to the hybrid attack, in which a drone loaded with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov aircraft on August 4.
Earlier, Federal Minister Alexander Dobrindt had blamed Russia for the incident. Wadephul stated that relations with Moscow continue to deteriorate; Germany is acting in coordination with EU and NATO partners. In addition to the closures, new individuals are to be added to the EU sanctions lists.
The Russian ambassador is being summoned for a meeting. The Russian embassy in Berlin thus remains Moscow’s only diplomatic representation in Germany. The minister also announced stricter border controls for Russian citizens; pressure on the so-called shadow fleet is to be continued.
