Swiss police have released new details about the fatal shootings at a rave in Aarau. The act was a rampage, they said. The 43-year-old suspect initially fired indiscriminately at people with a Kalashnikov in the night before Sunday, then used a pistol to shoot at a car.
In the attack on the grounds of the Aargau Racing Club, a 22-year-old woman died. Five people aged between 24 and 31 were injured, two of whom are still being treated in hospital. Among the injured is a German woman who said she suffered two graze wounds. Another person reported injuries from a ricochet on Monday.
Police said they assume with near certainty that the perpetrator acted alone. There is no evidence of any other involvement, said police chief Michael Leupold. The man, a Swiss citizen, was arrested almost 24 hours after the act. He has not yet commented on his motive, but his statements suggest psychological problems.
Initially, investigators had also considered a terrorist act or a settling of scores in the criminal milieu. A witness led them to the suspect. The large-scale manhunt was also coordinated with German authorities, as the crime scene is only about 25 kilometers from the border with Baden-Württemberg.
