During Tuesday’s talks, Putin stressed Russia’s solidarity with the Iranian people and praised their “courage and resilience in the struggle for independence.” He asked Pezeshkian to convey his greetings and “words of brotherly support” to Iran’s supreme leader as well.
“In this difficult time, we are trying to provide you with the necessary assistance,” Putin said. They had discussed the matter and were delivering the needed goods. Despite the military and political situation, Russia and Iran were maintaining the pace of their economic relations and continuing cooperation within their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Moscow’s support in the war with the US and during years of Western sanctions. “We appreciate and thank you for your positions at every stage, both during the fighting and acts of aggression, and under normal circumstances when the US imposed sanctions on us, both at the United Nations and in international forums,” he said. This showed that the relationship was strategic, not ordinary.
It was the first meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian since the start of the war on February 28, following US-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior military officials. Iran later blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route, while Washington imposed a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports. A ceasefire on April 8 ended the most intense phase of fighting, but sporadic attacks continue.
