In the latest US strikes on Iran, explosions were again heard in the city of Bandar Abbas and on Qeshm Island, according to Iranian state television. Detonations were also reported on Lavan Island, home to one of Iran’s oil export terminals. Oil prices rose after the strikes, with US crude briefly gaining up to five percent.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the strikes, saying they were a response to “recent attempted attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American soldiers in the region.” US Donald Trump described the strikes as “large and powerful” and threatened Iran on his Truth Social platform with further, much harsher attacks if Tehran retaliates.
A spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards, quoted by the Fars news agency, said the US would “regret” its latest strikes. Iran’s military announced “devastating strikes” against the US, and the Tasnim news agency reported that a “decisive operation” had begun, targeting US bases and interests in the region with missiles and drones. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, meanwhile, announced new sanctions against Iran, including a banking sanction later this week.
