Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066 across 58 scenes, arrived at the British Museum in London on July 10, 2026. The more than 950-year-old artwork was transported in a specially secured crate and is considered extremely fragile.
The loan, which belongs to the French state, will be on display at the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027. France and Britain agreed on the loan last year. The tapestry features over 600 figures and about 500 animals, making it one of the most significant artifacts of the High Middle Ages.
The loan was controversial, as restorers and art experts warned of potential damage. French Emmanuel Macron described the loan as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the British Museum, praised the successful transport as a major achievement for the teams involved.
