Friedrich Merz (CDU) participated in the 17th Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin on April 22, 2026. In his speech, he framed climate policy within the context of current geopolitical and economic upheavals. Merz emphasized that the integration of climate, economic, and energy policies is crucial in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
"Together with our European partners, together with partners around the world, together with the economy," said Merz, highlighting the importance of alliances. He pointed out that the Paris Climate Agreement remains a significant achievement despite all challenges and serves as a central foundation for the German government's actions in climate protection.
Merz made it clear that Germany wants to contribute but also expects the commitment of other states. Climate protection must not jeopardize Germany's industrial base but should ensure innovation, competitiveness, and societal acceptance.
The Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PKD) was established in 2010 and annually brings together a selection of countries to prepare for the global climate negotiations at the end of the year. The PKD is co-organized with the country or countries that will lead the next World Climate Conference. The 17th PKD was hosted by the Federal Ministry for the Environment in collaboration with Turkey and Australia, who are preparing for the upcoming COP31.
