PD Dr. Silke Pawils and Dr. Franka Metzner-Guczka, both psychologists from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), have been awarded the Kroschke Research Prize for Child Protection in Medicine. The prize, endowed with 7,500 euros, honors their research on father-specific risk and protective factors in child endangerment.
The UKE research group has studied the role of fathers in child welfare research for over 15 years. Often, the mother’s perspective is emphasized, while the father’s importance is neglected. “To improve children’s living conditions, it is crucial to include fathers in our conversations,” Pawils emphasized. “The resource ‘father’ is too valuable for children to be ignored.”
The jury considers the work of the two psychologists an important contribution to prevention and early support for families. Nadine Weber-Kroschke, chairwoman of the Kroschke Children’s Foundation, highlighted that research in medical child protection is essential for further development in this sensitive area.
The German Society for Child Protection in Medicine (DGKiM e.V.) has been committed since 2008 to the training and further education of professionals as well as scientific teaching and research in the field of child protection. By awarding the research prize, the DGKiM aims to promote initiatives that address previously neglected aspects of child protection.
