The Federal Government's Anti-Gypsyism Commissioner, Brand, emphasized the need for stronger recognition and appreciation of the Sinti and Roma on this year's World Roma Day. In his statement, he pointed out that the history of these ethnic groups has been shaped by centuries of persecution and discrimination. Despite progress in societal acceptance, prejudices and discrimination against Sinti and Roma remain widespread.

Brand made it clear that recognizing the cultural identity of the Sinti and Roma is of central importance. "It is time for us to acknowledge the diversity and contributions of these groups to society," he said. He urged society to actively combat anti-Gypsyism and to make the living realities of Sinti and Roma visible.

According to a study by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth from 2022, Sinti and Roma in Germany still face significant prejudices. Many people in Germany have only limited knowledge about the culture and history of these groups, leading to ongoing stigmatization. Brand appealed to educational institutions to incorporate the history of Sinti and Roma into curricula to promote better understanding and greater respect.

World Roma Day, celebrated annually on April 8, aims to raise awareness of the rights and living conditions of Sinti and Roma. It was established in 1971 and is observed worldwide. In Germany, numerous events and actions take place on this day to highlight the concerns of Sinti and Roma.

Brand emphasized that the Federal Government takes the concerns of Sinti and Roma seriously and will advocate for their rights. In recent years, various initiatives have been launched to promote the integration and participation of Sinti and Roma in society. Nevertheless, much remains to be done to dismantle existing prejudices and ensure equal participation.

In summary, Brand called for a comprehensive societal effort to improve the living conditions of Sinti and Roma and to respect their cultural identity. "We must work together to create an inclusive society where every person is valued, regardless of their background," Brand concluded.
