In the fight against shortages of essential medications, negotiators from the European Union (EU) have agreed on new rules. These rules aim to facilitate and support the production of pharmaceuticals in Europe with public funds, as announced by representatives of the European Parliament and member states.

Neophytos Charalambides, the Cypriot Minister of Health, stated, "Patients should not have to worry about whether essential medicines like antibiotics are available at their pharmacy or hospital." This agreement comes at a time when many people in Europe have faced difficulties obtaining certain medications in recent years.

The new rules stipulate that public contracts will prioritize medications produced in Europe. This is intended to help create secure supply chains and reduce dependence on a few countries. Currently, about 80 to 90 percent of medications in Europe come from Asia, particularly from China, according to the EU Commission.

Another aspect of the agreement involves the faster approval of so-called strategic projects that are crucial for the supply of critical medications. These medications are vital for patients, as there are often few or no alternatives available.

The new regulations still need to be confirmed by the European Parliament and EU member states, which is generally considered a formality once a compromise has been reached.
