The European Union (EU) has agreed on new regulations to promote the production of pharmaceuticals in Europe and reduce dependence on individual suppliers. This was announced by representatives of the European Parliament and member states in Brussels. In recent years, many people in Europe have faced difficulties obtaining essential medications such as painkillers and antibiotics at pharmacies.

Neophytos Charalambides, the Cypriot Minister of Health, stated, "Patients should not have to worry about whether essential medicines like antibiotics are available at their pharmacy or hospital." This regulation aims to ensure a steady supply of critical medications.

The new rules stipulate that when awarding public contracts for important medicines, particularly those affected by a high dependence on a few countries, preference will be given to medications produced in Europe. This is intended to create incentives for secure supply chains and expedite the approval of strategic projects.

The EU Commission had already highlighted the need for adjustments in March 2025 to address issues in medication supply. Shortages of active ingredients and the concentration of production in a few countries were identified as major causes. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains.
