Brussels has agreed on new rules to support the production of pharmaceuticals in the European Union (EU). This initiative aims to reduce dependence on individual suppliers and manufacturing outside Europe. In recent years, many essential medications, including pain relievers and antibiotics, have been temporarily unavailable in pharmacies.

Neophytos Charalambides, the Health Minister of Cyprus, stated, "Patients should not have to worry about whether essential medicines like antibiotics are available at their pharmacy or hospital." Cyprus currently holds the rotating EU Council presidency and thus plays a central role in the negotiations.

The new rules still need to be confirmed by the European Parliament and the member states, which is generally considered a formality if a compromise has been reached beforehand. The reform could help enhance supply security in the EU and ensure the availability of vital medications.
