EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has described Russia’s drone attack on Leipzig airport as “state-sponsored terrorism.” At the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Wicklow, Ireland, the focus will be on how Germany and the EU should respond to the incident. Kallas said Moscow’s ambassador had already been summoned and that further steps would now be coordinated.
The European Commission is preparing sanctions against 1,600 individuals and companies linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex. Kallas hinted that the list could be extended. Since the meeting is informal, no formal decisions are expected, only discussions on the way forward.
Kallas stressed that the talks aim to increase pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression against Ukraine. She pointed to Russia’s ongoing escalation, which continues to kill civilians and cause extensive damage. The EU foreign ministers want to coordinate a more effective response.
