The European Parliament voted on Thursday in Strasbourg with 418 votes in favor of introducing return centers in third countries. These new rules aim to facilitate the deportation of individuals who are required to leave the EU. Approval by EU member states is considered a formality to bring the new asylum and deportation rules into force.
The vote was accompanied by mixed reactions, including cheers and boos in the parliament. Conservative and right-wing MEPs supported the legislative changes, while other lawmakers responded with chants such as “Shame on you.” The new return centers are intended to accommodate individuals who are required to leave but cannot be returned to their countries of origin.
Unaccompanied minors are exempt from the new rules, while families with children and young people are affected. This decision could have far-reaching implications for the EU’s asylum policy.
