At the foreign ministers' meeting of the European Union in Brussels, increasing pressure on Russia over the deportation of Ukrainian children will be the focus. EU member states agree that Russian authorities must be held accountable for these human rights violations.
Kaja Kallas criticized recent statements by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, who proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine. Kallas described Putin's proposals as "very cynical" and pointed out that such offers cannot be taken seriously as long as Russia continues to occupy Ukrainian territory.
The deportation of Ukrainian children is classified as a serious war crime by international organizations. Reports indicate that thousands of children have been taken from occupied areas to Russia since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The EU plans to take concrete measures in the coming weeks to address Russian aggression and mobilize the international community. This could also include the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.
