According to Spiegel, the 62-year-old Albig told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung that it is conceivable for Manuela Schwesig to seek majorities on a case-by-case basis after the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He argued that Social Democrats should be the first to work with right-wing populists on certain issues that drive voters into their arms.
Albig criticized that multi-party coalitions with the CDU, Left Party, Greens, or BSW burden democracy and leave frustrated voters behind. Cooperation does not mean sharing the AfD’s ideological mindset, but showing lost voters: “We understood – come back home.”
The former head of government warned that if 30 percent vote for the AfD, one cannot permanently pretend it is the “offspring of hell.” The current course risks the Social Democracy’s very existence. Albig was mayor of Kiel from 2009 to 2012 and Minister-President from 2012 to 2017 before moving into business and now working as a lobbyist for Philip Morris.
