The work gondola of the two building cleaners was defective and could no longer be moved. A total of 25 firefighters were deployed. Strong winds significantly hampered the rescue operation, the incident commander told the dpa news agency.

The rescue teams pulled the men up eleven floors to safety using a battery-powered winch. During the operation, the gondola was pushed up to eight meters away from the facade by the wind and struck the glass facade several times. A technician from the operating company was able to safely park the gondola on the roof after the rescue.

The fire department later inspected the facade with a drone and found no damage, a Commerzbank spokesperson said. The building’s windows are cleaned three times a year. According to a high-altitude rescue trainer, this may have been the highest urban rescue ever conducted in Germany. The high-altitude rescuers practice regularly at the Commerzbank Tower, according to dpa.
