Nearly 200 members of the Frankfurt Greens debated the coalition agreement for four and a half hours on Saturday at the Deaf Center in the Nordend district. In the end, 80 percent voted in favor of the alliance with the CDU, SPD, and Volt. District chairwoman Tara Moradi said at the start of the meeting: “This city will continue to be shaped by the Greens.” Burkhard Schwetje acknowledged that the negotiating team had to make compromises in some areas, but emphasized the many green projects and three department head positions.

The loss of the mobility department in particular sparked discussions. Norbert Szep from the Radentscheid initiative criticized that the green department had successfully fought for better transport policy for years – “that is gone with this coalition agreement.” Mobility department head Wolfgang Siefert, on the other hand, pointed to passages in the agreement that provide for a reduction in car traffic. City councilor Julia Eberz showed herself combative: “If the CDU dreams of a rollback on mobility, they have never been so mistaken.”

Former federal chairman Omid Nouripour called on the base to approve: “Those who do not approve are voting for the Greens not to be part of the government – and then the other parties have a free hand.” The Green Youth failed with six motions for renegotiation, including a commitment to climate neutrality by 2035 and toleration of squatting. Moradi stated that renegotiations were “not a real alternative.”
