The youth traffic school at Frankfurt's Grüneburgpark is in urgent need of renovation. The practice area has seen better days, and a new building is not expected before 2028.

Since October 1960, children have been learning how to behave properly in road traffic at the youth traffic school in Grüneburgpark. The practice area, complete with a model road network, traffic lights, and a roundabout, is now in dire need of renovation. According to the education department, plans for an initial renovation measure exist, but they cannot be implemented due to a lack of budget funds.

Last school year, seven teams from Frankfurt’s police force gave traffic lessons to 7,573 students from 110 schools. 949 children from 20 schools came to the traffic kindergarten at Grüneburgpark for this purpose. The more than 60-year-old children’s tram, affectionately called the “Apfelsaft-Express” (Apple Juice Express), can no longer run due to the damaged tracks.

The city council has earmarked the construction of a new youth traffic school for the 2028 budget request. Until then, the officers will have to make do with the unsatisfactory conditions – much to the chagrin of the children, who are hoping for the traffic light system and the tram to be restored.
