With the update to FritzOS 8.25, manufacturer Fritz (formerly AVM) introduces a new data agreement that has many users concerned. It primarily involves diagnostic and maintenance functions.

The agreement regulates the use of device data for improving, maintaining, and analyzing errors in the services. Affected are meta, support, and diagnostic data as well as smart home data. Users can reject individual points, but this may result in functional limitations.

The diagnostic and maintenance functions are particularly criticized. Fritz reserves the right to collect technical diagnostic data in case of errors or suspected misuse – including device ID, firmware version, provider, and configuration details. A randomly selected, protected port may be opened for communication.

According to boerse-express.com, Fritz is implementing the EU Data Act with the 25 new provisions and is considered the first major company with correspondingly updated rules. The collected data is not to be used for marketing or passed on to third parties.
